Black Lives Matter

Like many, I too was shocked by the killing of George Floyd while being detained by Police Officers in the USA. Despite this happening thousands of miles away, we simply cannot ignore the emotion that his death has triggered. A widespread feeling of injustice has not only been felt in this country, but across the world.

While I look back and reflect on the horrors of inequality, racism and injustice of previous decades, I truly believe that we are a much less racist, more inclusive society; and without a doubt we are better and happier for it. Sadly, I do acknowledge that there is more to be done to further the progress that has been made; to challenge and remove prejudice, racism and inequality.

I welcome the work of this Government and of communities and individuals across the UK who dedicate their efforts to this cause. It is incumbent on us all – we can and must do more to create a better society. The Government recently established the independent Commission on Race and Ethnic Disparities, and I shall be looking closely in the coming months at their evidence-based recommendations to change lives for the better.

I defend and support the right to protest peacefully, as part of our democracy. However, I do not support those who ignore the rules on social distancing and risk a new infection at this critical time. I condemn strongly the actions of anyone who attacks the police, members of the NHS, or other key workers; who seek to attack public monuments or private property. This action is not just hurtful and damaging, but it also undermines the cause those individuals seek to represent. In the same vein, those who hijack a peaceful protest undermine its importance and dilute its message in the eyes of those who would otherwise have been compassionate to the cause.

As your local Member of Parliament, I will continue to work hard to ensure our country is a place where everyone is treated fairly and equally.
